How to Properly Handle Propane

Propane is a versatile gas used for cooking in the backyard, heating homes, and so much more. However, when propane is not handled correctly, it can be dangerous and explosive. Use these tips and tricks to ensure you and your family are safe.

Read Instructions

Reading the instruction manual is essential before using any item powered by this gas. There are specific procedures to follow to ensure that everyone is safe. For example, a grill should be several feet away from your house to prevent a fire. You should also carefully read the instructions on the container before using it to stay safe.

Proper Storage

Proper storage is essential to ensure that containers don't explode and family members are not exposed to dangerous fumes. Containers may leak, so they should always be stored outside instead of in a basement. Store them away from heat and anything else that may ignite the fumes, like a fire pit. They should also always be stored in an upright position.

Leak Testing

A leak test is essential if you suspect a leak or have not used a container for months. If you attempt to use a container for the grill and find it to be leaking, the fumes can make the fire spread outside the grill. To test for leaks, apply a mixture of dish soap and water to the connection points and watch to see if there are bubbles. If there are, that means there is a leak.

Turn It Off

Always turn off the container when not in use. Leaving it running is a common mistake when people are enjoying a backyard barbecue. According to BBQ Revolt, 7 out of 10 adults nationwide own a grill, making this a huge problem. It's easy to get distracted and forget to turn it off, but this can be dangerous and lead to accidentally using all your gas. Instead, please turn it off as soon as you're done cooking.

Replacement

Always replace your container when you notice signs of damage. Corrosion can slowly eat away at containers, resulting in small holes. Damaged hoses and valves can make it challenging to use the cylinder properly and can also cause leaks. We recommend replacing containers as soon as you notice the damage.
